Where to live on Koh Samui: my honest area guide
Chaweng or Maenam, Bophut or Lamai? Pick the area first and everything else gets easier.

When friends ask me where they should live on Samui, I never start with villas. I ask how they want their mornings to feel. Do you want to walk to a cafe, or wake up to nothing but birds? Do your kids need a school nearby? Do you want a beach you can swim at every day?
The island is small, but the areas feel completely different. The ring road takes you around Samui in about an hour without traffic, but in high season the stretch between the airport and Chaweng can feel like a city. That's why the right base matters more than the perfect house.
The north coast: Maenam, Bophut, Bang Por
Calm water most of the year, sunsets toward Koh Phangan and a village feel. Bophut and Fisherman's Village are the easiest start for newcomers: walkable, central, close to the airport. Maenam is quieter and better value, with a long beach where you can walk for half an hour.
The north east: Bang Rak, Plai Laem, Choeng Mon
Practical and pretty. Close to the airport and the piers for Koh Phangan and Koh Tao. Choeng Mon has one of the best family beaches on the island.
The east: Chaweng, Chaweng Noi, Lamai
Where the action is. Chaweng has everything, including noise. Lamai is my tip for people who want a real beach, a strong fitness and Muay Thai scene and better prices.
The south and west: Hua Thanon, Bang Kao, Thong Krut, Taling Ngam, Lipa Noi, Nathon
Local life, sunsets and space. Beautiful, but you will need a car or scooter for everything.
