Living here, you learn to plan around the calendar. Some days the whole island celebrates, some days the bars can't sell alcohol, and some weeks every ferry to Koh Phangan is full.

Loy Krathong (24 November 2026)

My favourite night of the year. People float small decorated baskets (krathongs) with candles on the sea, lakes and ponds to say thank you to the water. Go to a quiet beach or a temple pond, buy a krathong made of banana leaves (please skip the foam ones), and make a wish. Some calendars list the 25th, so check locally. The same night is a Full Moon Party on Koh Phangan, so boats are packed.

Christmas and New Year

Peak season. Prices are highest, restaurants are full and you should book everything early. There are fireworks along the beaches on New Year's Eve, and a countdown Full Moon Party on Koh Phangan.

Chinese New Year (6 February 2027)

Look for lion dances and red lanterns around the Chinese shrines, especially in the old shophouse streets of Nathon.

Buddhist holidays

Makha Bucha (February), Visakha Bucha (20 May 2027) and Asalha Bucha (July). Temples hold candle processions in the evening, which are beautiful to watch respectfully. On these days alcohol sales are not allowed in shops and most bars, so plan your dinner party accordingly.

Songkran (13 to 15 April 2027)

Thai New Year and the world's biggest water fight. Chaweng Beach Road turns into a party zone. Protect your phone, expect to get wet everywhere and don't plan important appointments.

Samui Regatta (usually late May)

A week of yacht racing off Chaweng Beach with parties in the evenings. The 2026 edition ran from 23 to 30 May. Dates for 2027 to be confirmed.

Rainy season (roughly October to December)

Heavy rain, especially in November, sometimes flooded roads for a day or two. It's also when the island is quiet, rents can be more negotiable and everything turns green.
