Before you buy: 6 things to check

  1. Scooter: most insurers only pay for motorbike accidents with a valid motorcycle licence (a car licence is not enough) and a helmet. Scooter accidents are the most common serious claim and the most often refused.
  2. Pre-existing conditions: declare everything honestly. Wrong answers can void your cover.
  3. Age limits: many plans don't accept new customers from 55, 64 or 75. Sign up while you can.
  4. Renewal: if you move for good, choose a plan that can't be cancelled because of your age.
  5. Hospital payment: private hospitals in Thailand often ask for a deposit or credit card. Check if your insurer offers direct billing or a payment card.
  6. Travel insurance is not expat insurance: normal annual travel policies usually cover trips of only 6 to 8 weeks, and only acute treatment.

Thai visa rules

  • DTV and tourist: no insurance required
